Solution
Understand the Question
  • Let the given vertices taken in order be A(1,2)A(1, 2), B(4,y)B(4, y), C(x,6)C(x, 6), and D(3,5)D(3, 5).
  • In a parallelogram, the diagonals bisect each other, meaning the midpoint of diagonal ACAC is identical to the midpoint of diagonal BDBD.
  • The midpoint formula for points (x1,y1)(x_1, y_1) and (x2,y2)(x_2, y_2) is: M=(x1+x22,y1+y22)M = \left(\dfrac{x_1 + x_2}{2}, \dfrac{y_1 + y_2}{2}\right)
  • By equating the corresponding xx-coordinates and yy-coordinates of both midpoints, we can solve directly for xx and yy.

Step 1 · Find the Midpoints of Diagonals ACAC and BDBD

Let the vertices of parallelogram ABCDABCD in order be A(1,2)A(1, 2), B(4,y)B(4, y), C(x,6)C(x, 6), and D(3,5)D(3, 5).Diagram 1

Midpoint of diagonal ACAC:

MAC=(x1+x22,y1+y22)=(1+x2,2+62)=(1+x2,82)=(1+x2,4)\begin{aligned} M_{\text{AC}} &= \left(\dfrac{x_1 + x_2}{2}, \dfrac{y_1 + y_2}{2}\right) \\[0.6em] &= \left(\dfrac{1 + x}{2}, \dfrac{2 + 6}{2}\right) \\[0.6em] &= \left(\dfrac{1 + x}{2}, \dfrac{8}{2}\right) \\[0.6em] &= \left(\dfrac{1 + x}{2}, 4\right) \end{aligned}

Midpoint of diagonal BDBD:

MBD=(x1+x22,y1+y22)=(4+32,y+52)=(72,y+52)\begin{aligned} M_{\text{BD}} &= \left(\dfrac{x_1 + x_2}{2}, \dfrac{y_1 + y_2}{2}\right) \\[0.6em] &= \left(\dfrac{4 + 3}{2}, \dfrac{y + 5}{2}\right) \\[0.6em] &= \left(\dfrac{7}{2}, \dfrac{y + 5}{2}\right) \end{aligned}

Step 2 · Equate Midpoints and Solve for xx and yy

Since diagonals of a parallelogram bisect each other, MAC=MBDM_{\text{AC}} = M_{\text{BD}}.

Equating xx-coordinates:

1+x2=721+x=7x=7−1x=6\begin{aligned} \dfrac{1 + x}{2} &= \dfrac{7}{2} \\[0.6em] 1 + x &= 7 \\ x &= 7 - 1 \\ x &= 6 \end{aligned}

Equating yy-coordinates:

y+52=4y+5=4×2y+5=8y=8−5y=3\begin{aligned} \dfrac{y + 5}{2} &= 4 \\[0.6em] y + 5 &= 4 \times 2 \\ y + 5 &= 8 \\ y &= 8 - 5 \\ y &= 3 \end{aligned}
Answer

x=6,y=3x = 6, \quad y = 3

Common Mistakes
  • Wrong Diagonal Pairs: The vertices are taken in order (A→B→C→DA \to B \to C \to D). The diagonals must be ACAC and BDBD. Pairing adjacent vertices (like ABAB or CDCD) as diagonals leads to incorrect equations.
  • Using the Distance Formula: Equating lengths of opposite sides (AB=CDAB = CD and BC=ADBC = AD) creates complex non-linear simultaneous equations. The midpoint property is far simpler and directly linear.
